‘Nuclear’ burn-off

A big controlled burnoff at the Balmoral State forest yesterday caused a spectacular atmospheric phenomenon. As great palls of smoke rose two miles into the air, the uprush of hot air from the blaze formed a mushroom - shaped pyrocumulus cloud.

The cloud stood out, like the result of a nuclear blast, in the otherwise cloudless sky, and the

Christchurch Weather Office and the Fire Service were deluged with inquiries. A Weather Office spokesman said the phenomenon was rare. It occurred in still conditions, when smoke and heat from a big fire rose very high into the air. Yesterday’s pyrocumulus cloud hung above the forest for several hours.
