Drivers to seek big rise
PA Wellington Truck drivers will seek a pay rise believed to be about 24 per cent when they meet employers for talks this morning. The Drivers Award is often seen as a trendsetter for the annual new round of wage increases. The demand follows a stalemate in talks aimed at changing the drivers’ pay
scale to the basis of skill, rather than weight carried. The parties agreed on a short-term award last August, while the talks continued. This award expired yesterday, with no agreement reached. The new pay demand, which shows drivers’ frustration about the lack of progress in the talks, will hit truck drivers at a time
when they are struggling to find capital to pre-pay the new road taxes. The Drivers’ Federation says it intends to go in “boots and all” to get the wage increase. However, it will be looking to the Government to help the industry meet increased costs — including both the road taxes and the renegotiated award.
