Pottinger wins Dunedin rally
PA Dunedin Bill Pottinger (Christchurch), driving his Escort Mexico 1600, won the Shoreline-4XO rally held in Otago on Saturday. Pottinger beat Wayne Murdoch (Timaru, Avenger 1600) by 25sec. Third place went to lan Begg (Wyndham, Mazda).
Fog slowed the drivers, the slippery roads claiming 14 of the 67 competitors. The 300 km course included 130 km of special stages. The major disappointment of the morning run was the retirement of Trevor Crowe /Christchurch, Avenger 1850) when he ran out of fuel. At the time he was running second.
lan Begg (Wyndham) drove his Mazda RX3 into third place and the up-and-coming Waikuku driver. Alec Doig, was fourth in his Escort 1600. Leo Leonard (Timaru) won the first three stages but then pulled out after
the axle broke in his Escort RSIBOO. Pottinger won the fourth and sixth special stages and Murdoch won the fifth stage. Murdoch has taken the lead in the Mainland rally series, as he was third in the recent West Coast event, in which Pottinger failed to finish. The third rdund is on Banks Peninsula next weekend. results.— B. Pottinger (Christchurch, Escort). 92min 53sec, 1; W. Murdoch (Timaru, Avenger), 93min IBsec, 2; I.
