Glacier road open
The Fox Glacier access road, which was closed to .vehicles after floods at Eas'ter caused washouts, was re- ; opened on Tuesday after(noon. But the Franz Josef (access road will remain (closed to vehicles for anlother three or four weeks. ■ Because damage to the 'Fox Glacier access road had (been less extensive, the Westland National Park 'Board and the Ministry ol Works and Development had (decided to concentrate on reopening it first, the board (chairman (Mr C. S. Christie) said. | The Franz Josef access J road had been washed out in (three places bv the Waiho .'River, Mr Christie said.
the first washout, about 800 m from the State highway turnoff, was the most critical. “At this point, slumping has left near-vertical banks of about 12m over a 50m length, causing a spectacular break in the road, and the (Waiho River continues to run against this bank,” Mr Christie said. Despite the flood damage people can walk to the ter(minal faces of the glaciers, about Bkm to Franz Josef (Glacier and slightly less to 'Fox Glacier. Visitors contemplating the (walk should check with the (park visitor centres at Franz Josef and Fox before going, IMr Christie said.
