Westland search for tramper

Greymouth reporter Preliminary searches have been made by helicopter from Big Bay to Cascade Point in South Westland for an Australian tramper now well overdue. The Greymouth police said yesterday that John Smith, a naturalised Australian, had put an entry into an intention book at Big Bay on March 23 of his intention to tramp north to Jackson Bay and Haast. It was known that he was to have picked up overseas air tickets at

Hamilton on March 31, but had not done so, said the police. He had not been seen or heard from since March 23. The area was subject to violent rainstorms on March 26, and rivers and streams were still impassable, the police said. Preliminary searches by helicopter have been without result. Ground parties will move into the area when river levels drop, and when the weather improves. Helicopter inspections will be made of tracks and huts.
