Candid Picture dead
A prominent New Zealand thoroughbred sire. Candid Picture. died of a twisted bowel at Eastside Lodge. Matamata, on Tuesday—the day he was to start his journey to a Nelson stud. Mr Ernie Becker recently sold an interest in Candid Picture to a group of businessmen in Nelson, where he is now living. He previously owned the wellknown Clarendale Stud, near Lichfield in Waikato, where he had an impeccable record, breeding 36 horses that faced the starter for 36 wins. Among them were Candidate. Panatelia and Eshowee. Candid Picture's arrival was expected to give the Nelson thoroughbred industry its biggest boost vet. The 17-year-bld had almost flawless conformation and an 80 per cent winners to starters ratio. He was bred in Ireland and brought to New Zealand from England by Mr Becker. The holder of three one mile track records in England—at Kempton Park. Sandown and Goodwood —he was to have stood at the Blue Lodge Stud at Brightwater with Falconhurst and Kenann. a top staving three-year-old and a Wellington Derby winner. Candid Picture was a dark chestnut by Dionisio (My Babu— Candida) out of Picture Gallery (Nasrullah —Painted Vale) and a half-brother to the successful sire Avrshire Bard, which produced the New Zealand champions. Bardall and Piko <lO wins in succession and leading three-vear-old of his time). Candid Picture. winner of seven races himself for stakes of $ll 000. has sired over 140 winners in Australia and New Zealand and had three winners at meetings in New Zealand last week end. . . , Tire best horse he has left m New Zealand is All Hands which won 10 races including three open handicaps in succession before injury curtailed his career. Others include Candidate, a winner at Nelson and the winner of six races in all: Candid Fair, Grand Image (five wins in a row over hurdles, steeples and in highweiehtsl. Candid Glow, Kandy King. Cindy Moss, Midland and Master Plan. Candid Picture’s biggest winner In Australia so far is Leica Star, winner of last season’s Doomben Cup He also sired Movie Fan (six wins) and Mister Producer (four wins).
