Waiau line reopening urged
A recently formed Christchurch group, Rail Action, yesterday urged the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) to reopen the Waiau branch railway line on a trial basis. A spokesman for the group, Mr D. Jones, said that the reopening should be] [accompanied by an aggressive marketing programme; in the Waiau-Culverden-(Waikar i-Hat.mer Springs area. A Railways representative should be stationed in Culverden to visit farmers to assess their rail-transport; needs. I i “Rail Action is concerned, that the branch closing! stemmed from the fact that] the 150 km road-transport] limit was introduced six] months before the road tax; was imposed,” said Mr’ Jones. “This may have been; deliberately done to show ] branch-line deficits for the] year ended March, 1978.” , Mr Jones said that Rail Action also wanted assurances from Mr McLachlan that there would be no further erosion of rail services to the West Coast. These services gave West Coasters a useful social link with Christchurch schools, hospitals, and sporting facilities.
