Shipping News Unused terminal poses problem
For sale, one steamer express terminal, magnificent harbour views, one car etui previous tennant now overseas, puce includes feature window snowing pioneers walking, an interesting conversation piece, apply in the first instance to the Lyttelton Harbour Board. it has not come to that yet but the future of the glass and aluminium joinery showpiece on Lyttelton’s number two jetty, along with the link span which must be handy for something, has again drawn tlie attention of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. With the last of the ferries long gone and unlikely to return. the once bustling terminal now lies silent, haunted by memories. and gathering dust. In fact, dust has proved something of a headache since the adjacent wharf is now the main bulk fertiliser berth and harbour board staff have had to seal windows and doors in an attempt to keep the stufl out. The place is still leased by the Union Steam Ship Company but a harbour board member (Captain A. R. Champion j said this week that a good look should be taken to see w’hat the terminal could be used for. ‘•The shed is just an eyesore,” he said. There have been a few suggestions from various quarters over the last 18 months ranging from a sea food restaurant or a cruising club premises to shifting it bodily up the hill for use as a library. The harbour board has agreed to hand the matter back to its port development committee for further consideration. ARRIVALS Union Lyttelton 7.24 a.m.), 4500. Wellington U S.S. .
