Meeting on creche
A public meeting will be tomorrow to gauge support for a proposed creche at New Brighton.
; A petition, signed by more (than 1200, calling for a creche near New Brighton’s main shopping area was (presented to the Christchurch City Council’s community services committee on January 31. The council said that it would wait until the results of a National Organisation of Women survey on preschool facilities in the Pegasus Ward were available before taking any action. Mrs R. Gibbons, one of the organisers of the peti--1 tion, said that provisional results of the survey had
shown that many pre-school-ers had no facilities available to them. The New Brighton Creche Petition Association had called a meeting on March 21, at the Roy Stokes Memorial Hall in New Brighton, at the request of the City Council. The purpose of the meeting was to give the results of the survey and to form a steering committee to implement the creche proposals, Mrs Gibbons said. If there was sufficient public support at the meeting, the City Council might be willing to buy or rent a disused church hall in Seaview Road, opposite the memorial hall, to house the creche for a trial period of 18 months, she said.
