Records fall in schools’ athletics
The rapidly advancing standards in track-and-field competition were underlined by top performances at the Christchurch inter-secondary schools’ athletics meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday. Thirteen records were broken and another was equalled. Including the new marks set in the preliminaries last week, this brought the number of records either broken or equalled to 22. in several events, the eld record was broken by more than just the winner.
One good example of this was in the junior girls’ 1500 m. D. Brook (Avonside Girls’) lopped a remarkable 4.2 sec off the old time with her run of smin 6.6 sec but she had to call on all her reserves to stay ahead. Her chief rivals, J. Olsen (McKillop) and S. Rivers (Rangi Ruru), also dipped comfortably inside the old record, set by S. James (Avonside Girls’) last year.
However, James kept her name in the record book with a splendid win in the intermediate girls’ 1500 m. She ran the distance In tain 51.4 sec. The runnerup, S. Harnett (Sacred Heart), also finished inside the old record of tain 53sec.
In the junior boys’ 3000 m, the first three place-getters all completed the race faster than the old record. B. Baxter (Burnside) was the first across the finishing line in 9min 29.1 sec, sprinting past his long striding Hillmorton opponent, A. Wilson, on the final lap. Wilson recorded 9mln 31.4 sec and the third finisher, W. Anderson (Kaiapoi), recorded 9min 48.1 sec. One record was set in the senior girls’ grade. S. Witheridge (Papanul) lunged across the finishing line at the end of the 100 m hurdles final in an excellent 15.2 sec to lower the record by o.3sec. C. Cox (Villa Maria) equalled the old record with 15.5 sec. If there was one record performance which stood out from all the rest it was that of E. Peterson (Hillmorton) in the senior boy’s long jump. He removed the oldest record in the book when he jumped 6.84 m in the long-jump preliminaries earlier in the week. In the final on Saturday he managed to extend this by a further 4cm. The mark of 6.68 m which he broke originally was set bj' J. Kearns (St Bede’s) 27 years ago. In spite of the excellence of Kearns’s long standing record. Peterson’s performance came as ;no real surprise. He won the iCanterburv senior long-jump title earlier this summer—at 17 the youngest, ever to do so—and went on to claim the New Zealand junior championship. On Saturday, he also won the senior boys’ 200 m sprint in the good time of 22.8 sec.
Another long-iump record to fall was in the intermediate girl’s section, where J. Wood (Linwood) jumped 5.5 m to add 24cm to the record. New records were set in both the intermediate and under-14 boys’ 100 m hurdles. C Huston (Cashmere) recorded a smart 13.9 sec in the intermediate race.
improving on the mark of 14.1 sec he set in the preliminaries. The under-14 record fell to D. Hamilton (St Bede’s) with a run of 15.675ec.
D. Roberts (Shirley) set a new time of Bmin 57.35ec in the intermediate 3000 m and G. Landry (Hillmorton) cleared I.BBm in the junior boys’ high jump tor another record.
L. Daniel (Avonside) clipped almost a second off the intermediate girls’ 400 m record with her winning time of 58.525ec. in the same grade, B. Wyber (Aranui) reduced the 800 m record to 2min 14.8 sec.
V. Lewis (Hornby) displayed considerable potential with her record-equalling run of 7.Bsee in the intermediate girls’ 60m dash. For a time it seemed as if she had also won the 100 m title in a very tight finish with D. Barraclough (Burnside). The judges at first awarded her victory but the photo-electric timer showed that Barraclough had won the title by O.Olsec.
Barraclough was credited with 12.675ec and Lewis with 12.685ec. This was, perhaps, the closest of many hard fought finishes throughout the day. Barraclough also won the 200 m title, in 25.8 sec.
The senior boys’ 100 m sprint provided another very close finish. The electronic timing equipment was unable to separate the first two but the judges awarded first place to G. Parker (Christchurch Boys’). D. Thomas (Christchurch Boys’) was given second place. The time they shared was 11.645ec. The third placegetter, T. Davies (Christchurch Boys’), was just o.o2sec slower. This was the first time in the championships that one school has gained the first three placings in any final. A fine sprint double was achieved by J. Bonniface in the senior girls’ grade. She won the 200 m in 25.585 Cc and just headed off N. Doak (Linwood) in the 100 m. Manual timing credited both with the same time of 12.3 sec. The winner of the recent New Zealand colts 1500 m title, M. Gilchrist (Cashmere), won the senior boys’ 1500 m title as expected. He completed the middle-distance double by winning the 800 m title as well. H. Riaeh (Christchurch Boys’), the New Zealand junior 10.000 m walking champion, comfortably won the 3000 m walk in 15min 4.6 see. High temperatures ruled out the possibility of a record. D. MtfKee (St Bede’s i stepped up a grade to win the open note vault with a height of 3.25 m. He also won the Intermediate long jump. R, Tulia (Aranui) gained an excellent field-events double with victories in the senior bovs’ discus (39.87 m and shot (12.65 m
