Record gate at Methven show

Although a southerly •torm blew up in the late' atternoon, the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association had another highly successful show on Saturday.

This was reflected in the record gate takings which at $2630 were up by more than' 26 per cent on the prveious; highest figure recorded in 1976. One of the secrets of the success of the show is its, diverse programme.

This year the great old Clydesdales of former days returned to the show after! an absence of about 29 years. The judge, Mr A. G. Holmes, of Rakaia, who bred the draught horses himself for close to 20 years, was obviously delighted and said that most of the horses were well up to the standard of earlier times when they provided the only means of : pow'er on farms. He gave the championship to Glen Earl, from Miss' Susan Butterick, of Wakanui. This was “a good action very true moving horse,” he said. In recognition of the l growing interest in spinning and weaving, there were classes on this occasion for sheep carrying black or coloured wool and there were also classes for this type ">f wool. For a new section Mr Warwick Gregory (Ashburton), who judged the sheep, said that the exhibition was a credit to the exhibitors. In judging these sheep he said that he gave preference to the fleeces over the animals themselves —. they had to

have quality fleeces — but all the same it was no good having a fine fleece on a dead sheep. He said that he had found an outstanding ewe lamb, in that it had a high quality fleece. It came from Ross Manson. Mr M. Collins (Ashburton), who judged the wool display, said that it was commendable that people had gone to the trouble to show wool in such a difficult season. There had been some excellent wool in both the sections for wool from stud and commercial sheep. The champion fleece of the show came from J. R. Todhunter and Sons. A rain fleece, Mr Collins said it showed excellent type but was perhaps lacking a little in clean-fleece weight. After the grand parade attention shifted for a while to an area where the Methven association had a crop of a little more than three hectares of linseed. This was gobbled up in a very short space of time by three big modern header harvesters in a mass header harvesting exhibition. The Methven association has for a long time taken a keen interest in beef cattie production. It conducts the M i d-Canterbury district export beef competition and also a grazing competition in which the weight gain of the steers taking part is recorded and which concludes just prior to the show. This year’s winner of the weight-gain competition was a three-quarter Charolais, quarter Friesian from B. T. Fisher (Greenpark), which) put on an impressive 265kgj in the period of the contest lasting more than 130 days, to put on close to 4Jlb peri day. These cattle will be killed and the value of the saleable' meat that they have put on assessed, and the winner i will receive a new trophy) which has been allocated to the association by the Meat l Board. It was given by Mr, S. Yamanaka, a prominent, Japanese Parliamentarian l and president of the Japanese National Federation of Beef Producers’ Associations.

Cattle in the export beef competition were judged on the hoof at the show by Mr N. Parker, a cattle buyer for Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating Ltd, in two classes — those expected to kill out between 220 and 270 kg and those which are expected to be heavier, as they will be assessed this week after they have been killed. For the season, Mr Parker said they were in good condition and were very similar i to what they would be like I in a normal season. He selected a Maine I Anjou Hereford cross bred] exhibited by D. P. Graham; and Sons (Tai Tapu) as the! champion steer of the show.' It had desirable conformation with a light fat cover and should give a! high yield of red meat, he I said.

The Lion Brown shearing contest, which extends over several breeds goes on over several months, was continued at the show with lambs being shorn as part of the competition. The administrator for the contest, Mr J. Williams, said that the shearing had been very fast with Peter Lyon (Pleasant Point) who won the open class, putting through 10 lambs in only: 9min 59sec.

This year a new pavilion had been provided for the! shearing with truck trailers] forming the platform. Mr Williams said that on this ■ occasion only two stands i had been used but there was] space for three, which] would mean that the exhibi-' tion would be more spec-! tacular.

In one of the concluding ■ Items on the programme, Mr] H. M. King, using two dogs, i skilfully split six sheep into ] groups of three and penned; each group.
