Polly Porter will be hard to beat

facing and trotting f \

By

R.D. GARDINER

Polly Porter auu ineste, which were next best behind; Big Skipper in the Cromwell; Stakes (20o0m) on March 6, should prove formidable opponents for the three-year-old fillies in the Inglewood! Stakes at Rangiora today. At Cromwell Big Skipper l only cut Polly Portei back by half a head and the merit of that effort was revealed when Big Skipper ran two 1 fine races against strong company at Trentham last week. Trieste was held up for a run at Cromwell and did, well for third after previous- i ly beating Polly Porter nar-l rowly in the Mannequin! Stakes at Wingatui last 1 month. That was over! today’s distance of 1600 m; and from No. 1 at the bar-| rier she could again prevail. I Of the others, only Craig’s Gold and Double Vision' appear capable of testing the southern fillies.

The second leg of thei T.A.B. treble, the Swannanoa! Maiden, is full of form! runners but Finalist, a fastfinisher for second to Jetty at Ashburton a fortnight ago. may fare best. Puketitiro has to be respected on his Riccarton second last month even though he has drawn wide and Onepunga. Leri, Triple Irish and Oldrimer will save' their admirers after good recent performances.

TTie final leg, the Oxford Handicap, should see Flying View, Biddy Magee and Lady Belinda fight out the finish. Flying View found 1200 m at Oamaru last Monday too sjiort but he is sure to be finishing on as well as anything over an extra 400 m today. Biddy Magee showed nothing at Ashburton but that is not customary for her and from her handy draw she could prove hard to peg back. Lady Belinda has been racing honestly lately and should pick one up soon. The top-weight Rosehip has to be respected, as do Jolt, Cyrene and Epinoy.
