Hunt qualifies for Games

The New Zealand women’s 400 m champion, Penny Hunt (Wellington), took a big step towards gaining a place in the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team with a splendid run of 53.55ec at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

This equalled the standard for manual timing set by the New Zealand selectors (B. S. Hunt, G. McCabe, and A. Potts). The event was added to the Christchurch inter-secondary school sports. Hunt flew to Christchurch to avoid the risk of injury running on the hard bituminous all-weather track in Wellington. Her trip was subsidised by the Wellington Athletic Centre

but the expense of travelling has ruled out any further visits to Christchurch.

“I have made three visits to Christchurch this season and my pocket is now empty,” she said. However, she rated her visit on Saturday as "well worth while. I felt that if conditions were right I would have a chance of achieving the standard. It was either go to Auckland, which would have been more expensive, or come to Christchurch. The one thing I had to have was a good track.”

Hunt will try for another fast time in a meeting she has been invited to at Hastings next Thursday.
