Problem corner of Square gets another look
[ Christchurch city council-: lots have asked to see J (alternative plans to discour-1 ! age parking in the Press Lane; 'corner of Cathedral Square.! The corner is a magnet for i litter, loitering, and bad! behaviour. Schemes proposed two! |years ago to get rid of cars' drifting in and out may be! revived in a different form i - by council traffic engineers. . Because the New Brighton! ; bus stop has been removed j : from near the corner, there ' 'is now even more room for ; parking. Tn his latest report j to the council, the Tratnc I Engineer (Mr M. L. Gadd) i said that approaches had ialready been made “by some! of the larger businesses in i the area, asking that parking ;be removed entirely from the iWarner’s Building frontage.” ‘ However, the present kerb [ layout made it neither pracjtical nor logical to ban park-, ing on the former bus stop.; “To achieve an effective l
ban on all stopping on the' 'vacated area, it may well be I necessary to carry out exten-I sive alterations to the kerb! alignment;” Mr Gadd said. The proposals made two: years ago may now be; revived if councillors, under: pressure to do something! about the trouble-spot, are j persuaded that construction! !of a new corner would do| the job. Alternatives may include i a combination of raised! kerbs, landscaping, pedestrian | tiles, barriers, and tub plants! in place of the present park-j ing in front of the fast food bars. Some improvement is expected later this year, after Warner’s Tavern changes hands and the new owner closes it for extensive renovations. Patrons who now cause trouble will move to other places, and will not be encouraged to come back when the business opens again, according to the new ' owner.
