Trentham track record set by No Show
Special correspondent Wellington The ever-conslstent No Show gave his owner-trainer-breeder a big thrill when he won yesterday’s Boulcott Handicap, the first leg of the Trentham double. No Show, never really far from the pace, reached the lead 200 m out and went to the post a head in front of the South Island colt Big Skipper. The first two were three lengths clear of Dandaleith with the three-year-old Northfleet the next to finish.
No Show ran the 2000 m in 2min 2s a track record, but not a New Zealand best. The best national mark is credited to Good Lord which ran 2min 1.6 s at Avondale, but that is not the fastest 2000 m run in the country. No Show is nine, but he continues to wear his age well. He has hardly ever looked better and before coming to Hastings he was only just beaten by Kinesis King in the Napier Park Handicap and the time before won at Wairoa. No Show is not in the Chalmers on the final day and will most likely spend Easter at Feilding. Then he will race at Hastings, and though Mr Kent would like to tackle the $20,000 Hawke’s Bay Cup with him. weight will be the biggest problem so it may be that No Show will run in the Ormond Cup instead. Yesterday No Show was ridden by Maurice Campbell and despite his recent good form, he was only the fifth favourite and paid over $7.
While he deserved his win. he may have been fortunate that Big Skipper, a colt from Wingatui took so long to settle. He has not been entirely happy on tlie trip north and missed a run on the first day. Yesterday he settled in midfield for Stephen Autridge and then ran on late in the race. It looked as though he might get up in the last few strides, but the post came too soon.
Surrey Park, stepping up to 2000 m. made the change without any ill-effects and ran on doggedly in front of the fastimproving Dandaleith and Northfleet.
Northfleet, in fact, looked a likely winner soon after the turn and then, when headed fought on again. Third in the Trentham Stakes last January trainer Alan Jones is to try the St Leger with him on Saturday. The favourite Membership was seventh and second favourite Fraxy was eighth. Neither really ran on, though Fraxy was badly checked in the early stages of the race. David Peake, after two frustrating days improved likewise today to win the Hut Handicap, the second leg on Ross Rula. He had earlier captured the Jerningham Handicap on Purple Kiwi,
Peake, on Saturday, was beaten three times into second in close finishes and Ms run of ill-luck continued fn another way when he was one of the four riders to fall in the New Plymouth accident which has sidelined Bob Skelton.
Ross Rula, a five-year-old grey by Tazrula, is trained at Takanini by Ray Verner and yesterday settled comfortably in the third line for Peake. Up front That’s Dandy set a strong pace, but soon after the turn he had been collared by Charene. Legal Command in the hands of Bruce Compton, made a likely run along the fence and for a stride or two looked a winning chance but then the final bid by Ross Rula out in the middle of the track was too strong and the winning margin was a length and a half. In the end. Legal Command was hard ridden to hold second in front of Cracker Day, which finished very fost. and That’s Dandy. Charene was fifth and the others, including Rushout. were well beaten in the finish. (T.A.B. CODE: WW) Weather fine; track fast. BROUGHAM HIGH-WEIGHT, $2600; 1600m.—1/1 SOVEREIGN SUPREME (5) 63 J.
