take-off from Hood Aerodrome, Masterton. It crashed and broke into pieces which were scattered in an 80m line through paddocks. Both men were killed. Mr Keyte’s son. aged 14. W'as on the ground at the time of the accident. Mr Schafer, married with two young children, was a keen outdoor man, enjoying tramping and fishing in New Zealand since he arrived from West Germany almost 20 years ago. But his biggest love was flying, and he had long dreamed of building his own plane.
