Donations to the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child are not deductible for tax purposes, according to a recent ruling by Mr Justice Mahon in the Supreme Court at Auckland — the case turning on whether S.P.U.C.’s activities were “charitable” or "oolitical.” His Honour was giving judgment on an appeal by Petronella Maria Teresa Mol-. loy. a registered nurse, of Auckland, against the Commissioner of Inland Revenue. Law,” his Honour found that the society’s main activity, for a good part of its existence. had been to oppose by all possible means the activities of the Abortion Law Re- j form Association and to frustrate its efforts to have the ' abortion laws changed. He held that the objects of I the association were clearly ; political, in that that association was trying to promote changes to the abortion laws, "and consequently the activities and objectives of the; society in endeavouring to | prevent these changes were. also politicaL” i
