Five may have died in snow

NZPA-Reuter Aigle, Switzerland About 300 people have spent a night searching for five skiers feared buried under an avalanche which swept down a crowded winter ski slope near Aigle, Switzerland. First reports said up to 20 people were feared to have been engulfed by five metres of snow. But the police later said all but five had heen accounted for. The avalanche thundered down Mont d’Or in the Vaudois Alps of southern Switzerland on a sunny afternoon while many holidaymakers , were on the ski slopes. A man and a child were found alive in snowdrifts shortly after the avalanche smashed into ski-lift pylons. About 300 policemen, troops, and mountainrescue teams worked through Sunday night combing the area with probes and tracker dogs for more victims. The police appealed for information on any skiers who planned to visit the area and had not returned home.
