Canoeist to keep paddling

fA Nelson A Greymouth schoolteacher who has just finished paddling a canoe from one end of the South Island to the other has decided to continue his voyage and become the first man to paddle around the island. Paul Caffyn arrived at Nelson about two weeks ago after paddling his 18ft sea canoe from Te Wae Wae Bay. near Riverton.

After a week resting at his home in Greymouth, he set off- from " Tahunanui Beach, Nelson, at 7 a.m. on Sunday, bound initially for Christchurch.

From Nelson to Cable Bay he was accompanied by a Nelson canoeist, Grahame Sisson, who had completed some modifications to Caf-| fyn’s canoe. Caffyn hopes to arrive at Lyttelton by Friday. Follow-1 ing him along the coast will be a couple in a car as a support party. On reaching Lyttelton, he! will visit Greymouth briefly before setting out on the last leg of the voyage to Te Wae Wae Bay. The trip up the West Coast to Nelson took Caffyn two months.
