N.Z. loses bowls
NZPA Newcastle, N.S.W. New Zealand was one of the overseas teams to lose in the first round of the third N.B.N. all stars invitation pairs bowls tournament at Hamilton North yesterday. Only three of the eight combinations won their first round. Papua New Guinea, Wales and Ireland were all untroubled to beat Australian state combinations, but England, New Zealand, Canada, Scotland and Hong Kong all went down. South Australia notched their first round win with a 25-13 margin against New Zealand internationals, John Murtagh and Peter
Beilis. Hong Kong was perhaps the unluckiest team on the day when beaten by the Newcastle defending championship team of Australian World Bowls silver medallist Barry Salter and Jack Mclntosh. Salter and Mclntosh, however, had to call on all their experience to avaid a surprise defeat. They were thoroughly tested by the Hong Kong pair of Clementi Cecil and Eric Liddell, who led for the greater part of the match. It was only in the closing stages that Salter’s vast experience on the 14 second running green enabled the pair to take a three-shot lead and press home their claims for a win.
