Jobless down a little
PA Wellington The number of people registered with the Labour Department as seeking work was 18,654 on March 3. This was a slight reduction on the 18,746 on February 17, the Minister of Labour, Mr Gordon, said. Included in this total were 2810 school-leavers and 361 university students. During February the Labour Department’s employment service placed 5796 persons in work. This is 734 more than the number placed lin January. Vacancies notified to the department and remaining unfilled at March 3 numbered 1926. This includes 426 available under the farm employment scheme. At March 3, 1631 people were employed under the farm employment scheme and 9347 under the temporary employment programme. Unemployment figures at March 3 (February' 17 figures in parenthesis), showing the number of registered unemployed, those on special work, and those receiving unemployment benefits, include:—
