Stadium cost now past $1M
The final cost of the “bargain basement” Pioneer Sports Stadium at Centennial Park will be more than SIM. Originally, the Christchurch City Council wanted to hold costs to $750,000. But the parks and recreation committee learned that another $104,000 — for carparking, landscaping, footpaths, entrance roads, and lighting — would put the price past the $715,000 building contract. Added to the other costs not included in the contract price, such as $37,500 for ceiling insulation, and $15,000 recommended now for tiered seating in the stadium, the car-parking requirement will put costs past SIM. Cr R. Lester said it would not be logical to leave moveable spectator seating out of the total. “We cannot just sweep it under the carpet because it will cost money and might embarrass somebody," he said.
