Smokey Hobbs just fails
The champion Canterbury greyhound, Smokey Hobbs, made his first visit to the North Island at the week-end and failed by the smallest of margins to return with the Wairarapa Cup and the S5OO first stake.
But the performance of the Old Hobbs—Little Vixen brindle dog left the Masterton crowd with no doubts about the class of the greyhound, which has become a favourite at Queen Elizabeth H Park.
He had a rough introduction to the Solway Show Grounds track in the open heats on Saturday. Smokey Hobbs was ahead when the hare broke down in bis heat, but returned four races later to again win his 630 m heat.
Smokey Hobbs was drawn in the Outside box for the final am jauipeu in the middle of the field. He was shunted back to the rear in the early running and his chances looked hopeless. But he sustained a withering run over the final stages and only went down by a nose to the Wellington Cup winner, Take a Bow.
Unfortunately, an oversight in an early payment of nomination fees has prevented Smokey Hobbs from being eligible for the lucrative New Zealand Breeders’ Stakes to be run ai Queen Elizabeth II Park on March 25.
Without Smokey Hobbs, New Zealand’s most prestigious race will lose one of Its biggest drawcard*.
