Candyboy set for Riccarton
Special corres. Oam&ru < Candyboy advanced in favour for important races at the Riccarton Easter meeting when he handed out a gtlloping lesson to his rivals in the Squires Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday. Spanish Bid ran an impressive trial for the Great Easter Handicap when she ; burned off the opposition in! the Glenmorven Easter Trial, i The trainer-rider, Jimj Pankhurst, had Candyboy! prominent in the early stages' and was left in the role of ! pacemaker. Lucky William gave him little respite but the Sucaryl—Moy entire shook! off his attention at the 600 m, when he opened up a break! of three lengths. With Pankhurst sitting still, Candyboy cleared right away in the straight. “I moved my hands on him at the top of the straight and he just took off,” said Pankhurst later. The Swagger made an encouraging switch to middledistance racing when he ifought on for second after; trailing Candyboy. His effort ! was good enough for Alister I Robinson to accept the; rjount in the Riverton Cup.i Spanish Bid was quickly in; command in the Glenmorven; ; Easter Trial and maintained | a strong gailop to win by a length and a quarter from 'Game Warrior. Orbiton indicated he was
coming to hand well for Riccarton when he came from the back for third, and Dandyman came on the scene late to take fourth.
Spanish Bid has now won six of he- ten starts for Arowhenua owner-trainer, Peggy Dunn, who races the four-year-old with her husband, Lance.
