Better TV1 service

About 1500 viewers in the Hanmer Springs, Waiau, and Hurunui areas will receive an improved TVI service next Monday, when the Broadcasting Corporation commissions a new translator on Wallace Peak. The translator, which cost about $12,000, will work on 100 watts, instead of the present 25 watts, and will thus provide a stronger signal.

To get the best reception, the corporation’s engineers advise viewers to change aerials from horizontal to vertical. Programmes from TVI will still be on channel five. Viewers are asked to rake care when altering the position of aerials. They should turn off and unplug the TV set; note where power and telephone lines are and keep clear; keep aerials or sup-

ports from falling across or touching power lines; wear suitable footwear when on the roof and avoid a wet roof; and have an assistant on the ground standing by, if possible. The extension of TV2 coverage to the area may be some time off. Broadcasting engineers do not have a date for the installation of a second translator.
