Customs searches
Sir, — I wish to comment on the statements made by Mr Earl Wild and reported in “The Press” on March 4. I believe all would agree that customs searches are necessary, but I am writing to substantiate Mr Wild’s objection to the uncivil manner in which these searches are sometimes conducted. Upon returning to New Zealand recently, an official, while searching my belongings, questioned me as to the age of my camera. I told him it was three years old. His reply was, “either you have looked after it or you are a liar.” I was stunned and wonder now what impression overseas visitors must form of New Zealand when faced by such offensive and discourteous behaviour. On other occasions the Customs officers at. Christchurch have been most polite, but this last experience of mine certainly confirms Mr Wild’s criticism. — Y’ours, etc., R. C. GRAY. March 7, 1978.
