Robbery charge

Two men accused of robbing the Springfield Hotel were committed to the Supreme Court for trial yesterday after a Magistrate’s Court hearing which continued until 8 p.m. Sant Ram Shankar, aged 21, and Owen Francis McCauley, aged 36, both machine operators, appeared for the taking of depositions before Messrs J. P. Green

and R. M. Naysmith, Justices of the Peace. Both accused pleaded not guilty to joint charges of aggravated robbery of the Springfield Hotel on February 12, possession of two shotguns with intent to commit robbery, and burglary of a garage at Springfield. The hearing began at 10 a.m., and finished at 8 p.m. after breaks for lunch and tea.
