Very few forward! Umbs were included, this no doubt being a reflection of the drought conditions. The sale opened with a number of pens fetching more than $B, and at this level the market appeared to be around 50c a head stronger. But with the offering of small pens, most of which contained the small lambs, the market lost a lot of strength. Store cattle The store cattle market was largely unchanged. The yarding! comnrised about 450 adult and 20-mbnth-old cattle and 100 calves. The calves included an annual consignment from a Banks Peninsula vendor. Usually they received good inquiry. Although well-grown for age, they had a ■ slower sale. Compared with last I year, they were S4O down. The I best of the steers fetched 553, | and the heifers 332. Other hei- | fers ranged from 313 to 325. As | was clearly shown last week, the I calf season in present circumstances Is going to be very I difficult. ; There was not a great deal of life in the sale of the grown store cattle, but in the circumstances, it was satisfactory. Any steers approaching killable condition drew fair competition, but among the rest of the offering there were some passings. 1
