10-a-side rugby raised again
Apart from the election of officers, and it will be surprising if any sitting members are defeated, the only item likely to take up much time at the Canterbury Rugby Union’s annual meeting tonight, is a notice of motion on the thorny question of junior 10-a-side rugby. Recently the union decided to extend 10-a-side football this year so that it takes in the two lowest grades of under 10 open and under nine and under 30kg. It was further decided that no competition points be awarded in these grades. The notice of motion
comes from the Linwood club, which for some years has been a strong opponent of 10-a-side rugby. The club’s motion is that the union reconsider its decision. Linwood claims that after five years of experimentation, 10-a-side rugby has not fulfilled its objectives. It is also mindful of the difficulty in securing coaches and contends that the absence of competition points will result in defections to other codes.
Furthermore, Linwood stands firm in the belief that rugby is a game for 15 players, whatever their ages.
