Easy tennis win for Canterbury

Canterbury was too strong i for South Canterbury in a representative tennis match j in Timaru, and won by 191 matches to five. The lofty Canterbury No 1, Alan Croad, had a good win against the promising Graeme Liddell in a hardhitting top singles match, and Warren Edgecumbe put up an inspiring captain’s performance for Canterbury by beating the former Davis Cup player, John Souter. Judith Phillips, Canterbury’s No 1 woman, was too strong and experienced for the youthful Andrea Miller, and all the other Canterbury women won their singles comfortably.

South Canterbury made a brave showing in the mixed doubles, with Liddell and .Miss Miller gaining an excellent win against Croad and Miss Phillips in the feature match. But the home team’s final score was helped by two defaults in matches involving Paul Boatwood.

Women’s singles.—Miss J. Phillips beat Miss A. Miller, 6-1, 6-1; Mrs J. Macdonald beat Miss L. Eddington, 6-3, 6-3; Miss J. Wilson beat Miss C. Collett, 6-1. 6-2; Miss C. Oakley beat Mrs M. Harkness. 6-2. 6-0; Miss A. Davidson beat Miss J. Cromarty, 6-1, 6-3; Mrs E. Smith beat Miss V. Dennison, 6-1, 6-0.

Men’s doubles.—Croad and Edgecumbe beat Liddell and Souter, 6-2, 6-2; Frinch and Boatwood beat Martin and Hazlett. 6-0, 6-7, 7-5; Mackay and Howarth lost to Prentice and Posa. 2-6. 2-6.

Women’s doubles.—Misses Phillips and Oakley beat Misses Miller and Eddington. 6-3. 6-2; Mrs Macdonald and Miss Wilson beat Miss Collett and Mrs Harkness. 6-1, 6-3: Miss Davidson and Mrs, Smith beat Miss Cromarty and Miss Dennison. 6-0. 6-3.
