Drought problem spreads

More areas in Canterbury are likely to have to seek drought relief unless good rains fall very soon. The president of MidCanterbury Federated Farmers (Mr R. W. Johnston) said at the week-end that unless something dramatic happened, its drought committee would have to meet this week. Some areas in the district had been dry for a considerable time, and farmers might have to sell capital stock, said Mr Johnston. If good rains fell in South Canterbury in the next week they would be in time at least to partly retrieve the situation, said the provincial president (Mr P. H. Elworthy) at the end of last week. But in two areas of the district a decision has been made to seek drought relief — in Albury-Cave and Rangitata-Orton. If there is not rain soon. Mr Elworthy expects that similar action will follow in other parts of South Canterbury.
