Fire on way to course

From G. K. YULE in Melbourne The Christchurch oacer, Wee Win, the Grand Final favourite, Pure Steel, and tt’P Auckland trotter, Yadran, had a narrow escape from serious injury when being taken to Moonee Valley on Saturday night. Thev had been on the road for about 20 minutes when the horse float in which thev were travelling was signalled into the side of the road bv a motorist who told the driver that the back of the vehicle was on fire.

Apparently a passing motorist had thrown a lighted cigarette and it had caught in the hessian covering of a sulky used for Wee Win’s dusi sheet. The sulky was destroyed, a shaft was badly charred and the paint on the back of the float blistered before the fire was extinguished. “Along with Tony Milna and Pure Steel’s attendant I was travelling with the horse in the back of the float. Fm glad that motorist stopped us in time or we could have been in real trouble,” said Max Thompson, the part-owner and trainer of Wee Win, which raced in a borrowed sulky on Saturday night.
