Savile Cup costs high
After an absence of two years, the South Island will be represented at the Savile Cup. New Zealand polo’s most prestigious event, in Feilding, beginning on Tuesday. The Amuri club will send a reasonably strong team north for the tournament, but other clubs have been scared off by the high over-all cost involved. With each player needing three horses, transport difficulties make the effort considerable. The Amuri team is: One: Bruce Calder (one handicap); two: Alan Calder (three); three: Graham Higginson (three): four: Colin Clark (two). The reserve is Dick McLachlan, on a one handicap. In 1976, a team was sent to the Savile Cup, and it consisted of South Island players from different clubs.
The team will plav in the intermediate grade with a handicap of 8-12 goals. The winners of the two intermediate grades play off in the final. Three tournaments remain for the local players to contest. On March" 18 and 19, the Ashlev club tournament will be held at Ryan’s Road and should feature about 16 teams. None, however, will be from the North Island. The tournament has usually been held at the Rangiora Show Grounds nut the organising committee, obviously hoping for a better attendance, has switched the venue. The Amuri club tournament will be held at Culverden from March 25 to 27 while the South Island polo association championships will be held at Ryans Road from April 7 to 9.
