‘Women should register’
Women who have lost their jobs should register as unemployed even though they may not qualify for a benefit, said the Christchurch Women’s branch of the Labour Party this week. The branch president (Mrs Mollie Clark) said there was concern that women had been told there was no point in registering if they did not qualify for the money. “This is another aspect that keeps unemployment figures down, painting a false picture of the situation and creating unnecessary pressure on the already hard-hit family,” she said.
The Labour Party branch commended the Canterbury Trades Council for its support of the 500 employees of Miller’s, Ltd. Many of them were women who would receive no unemployment benefit although they paid a “single" tax.
