New mark by veteran

The balmy Christchurch weather must be conducive to top performances by veteran athletes. Last week-end, Arthur Grayburn broke a world javelin record and now, at Queen Elizabeth II Park, Bill Hobbs has set a new world mark in his age group for two miles. A week before his fiftieth birthday, Hobbs covered the distance in lOmin 29.1 s to beat the under-50 record of lOmin 40s set by James O’Neill, of California, on Boxing Day, 1975. Hobbs has been prominent in middle-distance track running and crosscountry competition for manv years in Canterbury.
