China’s new ‘dragon’

The Dragon. By Alfred Coppel. Macmillan. 367 pp. $10.25.

The tale of “The Dragon” moves in the manner of an intercontinental ballistic missile: it starts slowly and ponderously, accelerates at a tremendous pace, and ends in an explosion. China has developed a weapon, dubbed the “dragon” by the peasants of the Turfan Depression, and it could change the balance of power in space with its ray of light. A Russian agent reverts to the ways of his Tartar ancestors to discover the the secrets of Turfan. He succeeds, and the information throws the Kremlin and the White House into an uneasy alliance to deter the Chinese from using their laser. Alfred Coppel handles well the complexities of the situation he builds up; the reader is soon caught up in domestic and international power struggles. Only the politica situation in China lacks realism, as far as we can tell now, but Mr Coppel cannot be blamed for assuming when he wrote that Chairman Mao would be deified. —ALEX FOX.
