Red Cross seeks new members
Canterbury will join other regions of the New Zealand Red Cross Society this month in a membership drive to meet a growing demand for Red Cross work and welfare services. The secretary-manager of the Red Cross Society in Christchurch (Mr J. R. Mahoney) -aid vesterdav that the 72 branches of the society In Canterbury
were well established, but needed new members, particularly in the 30-year to 40-vear age-group. “In last year’s membership drive we were able to recruit about 300 new members throughout Canterbury and we hope to exceed that amount by a large number this year,” he said. Red Cross activities needing new members in
eluded emergency relief teams, make-up teams working in hospitals, meals-on-wheels, first aid courses, reading to the blind, and other local welfare assistance. The secretary-general of the Red Cross Society (Mr J. W. Talbot) said from Wellington that although the organisation had 26.000 adul’ members, many more were needed.
