O.A.U. steps up Canary push
NZPA-Reuter Tripoli The Organisation of African Unity is stepping up its campaign to gain independence for the Spanishruled Canary Islands. The O.A.U. Council of Ministers has recommended that member States give assistance to the Canary separatist movement, which has yet to be formally recognised by the O.A.U. The Algerian-backed movement. called the M.P.A.1.A.C., wants self-de-termination and independence for the islands, in the
I Atlantic off north-west Africa. The council invited mem-! ber States near the Canaries! ]to consider requests fori ; transit facilities for the sep-1 aratist movement’s com-! batants going to and from the islands, and said the: States should also consider I giving other assistance. The 49-member council also recommended that the O.A.U. secretary-general (Mr William Eteki Mbou Moua) | ask the United Nations DeI colonisation Committee to ! declare the islands a nonlautonomous territory.
