No ban on fathers
Fathers would not be banned from being present during the birth of their children, the North Can- : terbury Hospital Board was told. Dr W. J. Pryor was commenting on a decision of the board’s policy committee regarding the proposed banning of relatives of patients from operating theatres during surgery. This matter had been investigated by the policy committee after a father had been present in an operating theatre last, year while his wife was delivered of a child by caesarian section. The board agreed, subject to the approval of the
Medical Advisory Ccmmittee, that “except in verv exceptional circumstances and with the authority of the superintendent, attendance in operating theatres should be restricted to those members of the staff who have duties to perform within the theatre.”
