‘Bog garden’ sold
An area of the Mona Vale grounds containing land known as the “bog gardens,” between the Avon River and Fendalton Road, has been sold to Paynter and Hamilton, Ltd. Private access to the land, on which a house could be built, will be from the road. But 20m of the river bank will be kept in public ownership as an esplanade reserve. That is the area of the undeveloped bog lands.
The reserve strip will be vested in the Waimairi County. There is at present no public access to it since a footbridge from the main Mona Vale grounds has been declared structurally unsafe. . Because it was now the Waimairi County reserve, future public access, which would probably mean a renovated or new bridge, would be negotiated with the county, the Mona Vale Management Committee chairman (Mr W. J. Harrington) said this week. Those negotiations had not yet started.
