Sportsman on theft charge

■Three men, including a prominent New Zealand sportsman, all of whom had “blameless records,” appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with stealing almost S9OO worth of sporting goods. Counsel (Mr G A. McVeigh) said as the three men entered the

dock that the charges had arisen out of a disputed civil debt. All three, whose names were suppressed in the interim, worked for the same firm which had supplied the sporting goods to a city shop. These had been supplied, said Mr McVeigh, subject to certain terms being complied with.

When they were not the three men, acting on the instructions of their employer, had gone to the shop to repossess the goods. This task they had carried out in the presence of the manageress of the shop. Mr McVeigh said no complaint had been made by the shop to the police. The complaint was made

when later the shop went into liquidation and the removal of $9OO worth of goods was brought to the notice of the Official Assignee. The charge would be defended, said counsel, and March 13 was set down for the taking of depositions.
