Inflation hits Church work
PA Auckland The pressure of inflation was making it increasingly hard for churches to continue ecumenical work on top of their individual activities, said the Rev Angus MacLeod. general secretary of the National Council of Churches. In Auckland. Research should be done into the long-term effects of inflation on the whole pattern of church life. Mr MacLeod told the council’s annual meeting, which opened in Parnell. “Inflation is making crucial demands on churches to! decide on priorities." he | said. The training of ministers!
ministries should be examined tn the light of the effects of inflation. “It may be necessary for churches to travel lighter, if not light.” lie said. The continued proliferation l of autonomous ecumenical bodies was calling the role of the council into question, Mr MacLeod said in his report. In the past these were usually initiated by the council and came under its control. Today more of them worked independently. The Churches’ Education Commission, the Ecumenical i Secretariat on Development, ; the Inter-Church Trade and Industry Mission, and the j Inter-Church Commission on ■ Immigration and Refugee Resettlement were such bodies.
