S.I.S. controls urged
Legal controls governing police conduct should be extended to cover the activities of Security Intelligence Service agents, said the Secretary of the Canterbury Council for Civil Liberties (Dr K. P. Clements) in Christchurch yesterday. The S.I.S. legislation now in force made the public more vulnerable to illegal “bureaucratic aggression,” he said.
“The immunity provisions of the legislation mean that ordinary legal checks do not apply to S.I.S. agents executing interception warrants. This contrasts very strongly with the police which know that they have to work within the law at all times.” The S.I.S. situation posed very real threats to individual rights and the legal protections available to ordinary citizens, Dr Clements said.
