Scientists face lonely winter
Seven months of Isolaon in the Antarctic lies head for the 11 men who vill winter over at Scott Jase this year. A flight carrying the last of the base summer staff to New Zealand is scheduled for February 20, and there will be no further flights until October. During that time the 11 men at the base will carry out repairs and maintenance in preparation for the influx of about 150 staff members next summer. They will also run scientific equipment which enables year-round studies in the upper atmosphere and Earth sciences to be done. At nearby Arrival Heights, about skm from Scott Base, a special “auroral” hut housing specialised cameras has been erected to photograph the Antarctic aurora. Other year-round programmes include measurement of solar radiation, humidity, air pressure, and light penetration through the atmosphere at various altitudes. Two New Zealanders are wintering over at the South Pole station. They are John Waller, a meteorological officer from Canterbury, and Kevin Bisset, a Cambridge technician.
