Big gas tank unloaded
The biggest reefer container vessel afloat for the last five years the Remuera, made her first visit to Lyttelton yesterday. Renamed the Remuera Bay when she rejoined the O.C.L. group late last year, her preeminence in reefer cargo carrying capacity was not eclipsed until last December with the arrival of a new class of ships confusingly designated Remuera class | container ships. i The Remuera Bay has a capacity of about 1100 reefer containers. The two new Remuera class ships Resolution Bay and Mairangi Bay can each handle an additional 150 reefer containers. However, the Remuera Bay had not only containers in store for Lyttelton’s container crane. For the first time it was called on to discharge a 77,000 litre liquid gas storage tank imported from Britain by New Zealand Indus rial Gases.
A specially designed hook and spreader was used to handle the tank which only just managed. to fit between the crane’s legs. ARRIVALS Remuera Bay (7.41 a.m.i, 43,000, Wellington (0.C.L.). DEPARTURES Holmdale (6 p.m.). 911. Capt. H. C. F. Hunt, Chatham Islands (U.S.S.).
