Unemployment
Sir, — Ken McAllister (“The Press,” February 15) distorts my plea to accept
economic reality. No Government can guarantee full employment, particularly with the introduction of equal pay and married women firmly entrenched in the work force. As one who is New Zealand-born, my concern is to see the man reinstated as the bread-win-ner and greater emphasis placed, on family life. Add to this Marion Tomes’s advocacy for eight hours work for eight hours pay and New Zealand would not have “40,000” unemployed as stated by Ken McAllister. Our future standard of living will not be determined by political manipulation but by reducing the numbers in the work force engaged in servicing and administration and by concentrating on export production. When we realise that a high standard of living has to be earned we may even become export conscious. Spare a thought not only for the genuinely unemployed but also for the single income family. L. J. STEVENS. Oamaru, February 15, 1978.
