Selwyn Bridge
The artificial heating equipment placed in the deck of the Selwyn River bridge to prevent icing has proved completely satisfactory.
A report to the board said that after the deck of the bridge had been widened in 1969 d severe deck-icing problem had developed, which had caused many accidents. Whenever there was a frost, grit had had to be laid on the bridge to reduce the danger. Thermostatically controlled neon warning signs had been installed, but had often been ignored. After smal'-scale testing with deck-heating cables,
$41,053 had been spent on heating cables over the complete deck. That heating system had been working for a full year, with completely satisfactory results and no traffic difficulties from ice. However, as frosts last winter had not been as severe as expected, there would be further trials this winter. A transformer had been installed and during more severe frosts extra power would be available.
This was the only bridge with de-icing equipment in New Zealand, said the Minister of Works (Mr W. L. Young), but other board members hoped it was not setting an expensive precedent.
