Man tried to escape from dock
PA Auckland A Mount Eden prison inmate tried to escape front the dock when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland yesterdev for sentence on a charge of attempting to break out of prison. The inmate, Edward Jamieson, aged 21, had been
stood down while Mr J. H. Hall, S.M., read his probation officer’s report. As he dashed from the dock, Jamieson was pursued by the court orderly and the police prosecutor, Sergeant L. J. Higgins. “One civilian held the door and another — a man waiting to answer a charge
himself — helper’ us struggle with him,” said Sergeant Higgins. “I lost my tie and four buttons.” Policemen from other courtrooms were quickly on the scene and Jamieson was returned to the cells. When he reappeared, handcuffed, the Magistrate sentenced him to one yar’s
imprisonment, to be served cumulatively on his present four-year term for aggravated robbery. “I think your attitude to prison and prison disciSline has been exemplified y your attempt to escape from police custody this morning,” he told Jamieson. /
