The Canterbury Union of the Unemployed has obtained an office in Cashel Street and has called on the public to offer jobs. The office, at 298 Cashel Street, will be open from today. The union’s joint coordinator (Ms S. Raymond) told a meeting of about 50 unemployed persons yesterday that the union had already received some offers of jobs and was compiling a list of unemployed persons who would be offered the jobs as they arose Another self-help project

which the union wants to run is a collective garden scheme, using vacant land, to grow vegetables for those in need. A meeting will be held on Friday at the Cashel Street office to form an executive to run the affairs of the union. The union’s other joint coordinator (Mr T. N. D. Anderson) said that the interim committee proposed that the union become an incorporated society and affiliate with the Federation of Labour.
