Creepers on the road

Sir, — May I draw attention to an accident-promot-ing tactic used by a number of city motorists. It is the practice of allowing one’s vehicle to move slowly forward when one does not have the right of way. Its advantage is that those who use it are able to get away to a flying start because they have never really come to a stop. It is particularly dangerous when used in making a right-hand turn. A slight misjudgment can result in a serious collision. At best, this tactic is thoroughly discourteous to the driver who has the right of way. If this driver slows or applies the brakes, he is likely to upset the other’s judgment and increase the chance of a collision. If he continues at speed, his safety is entirely in the hands of the “creeper”. From a defensive driving point of view this is not good. — Yours, etc., G. A. LEICESTER. February 13, 1978.
